The Reading Post Change of scene - Judy Slater will move on from playing the Snow Queen to playing factory girl Carmen in Bizet's classic opera. Riches to rags for Judy after Snow Queen. Former dancer and champion athlete Judy Slater has become a fully-fledged actress and singer. She takes the title role in a stage version of the Hans Anderson story The Snow Queen which Maidenhead's Norden Farm Arts Centre is performing until January 6th. Though born in the West Indies, Judy has a Scottish father which is why she ended up studying music and drama over the border. Her first training was in classical ballet but she found she had a talent for running... Judy's sprinting achievements included becoming Scottish 100 metres champion - but then a track injury closed that avenue. Fortunately she had already developed an interest in acting so performing became her goal... Judy thinks that her most strenuous role to date was a futuristic version of Jungle Book in which she played Mowgli and in which the jungle became the city. She is a versatile singer and has ranged from the opera stage to vocalising with a Latin-American band... and has a special interest in developing new work. From The Snow Queen she goes into a touring production of Bizet's Carmen again in the title role. |
